American Axle & Manufacturing company history timeline

1994

AAM was founded in 1994 when a private investor group, led by Richard E. "Dick" Dauch, James W. McLernon, Raymond Park and Morton E. Harris purchased the Final Drive and Forge Business Unit from GM's Saginaw Division.

1996

His investments and changes in manufacturing techniques drove the company's sales up to $2.2 billion in 1996, by which point his efforts had produced sufficient tangible results to attract a large cash infusion.

1997

In October 1997, Blackstone acquired a controlling stake in the company, giving Dauch as much as $700 million to funnel toward AAM's expansion and improvement.

1998

In 1998, the company acquired Scotland-based Albion Automotive (Holdings) Limited, a supplier of front steerable and rear axles, driving heads, crankshafts, chassis components, and transmission parts.

1999

In 1999, AAM went public, and is traded as "AXL" on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). AAM has grown to supply various OEM manufacturers around the globe in the passenger car, light truck, and commercial vehicle segments.

2000

In 2000, after six years of working to improve AAM's manufacturing capabilities, Dauch could point to convincing evidence that his expertise had worked wonders.

The dramatic improvements drove the growth of the company, enabling it to edge past the $3-billion-in-sales mark in 2000, 84.5 percent of which was derived from sales to GM.

2002

2002: AAM is awarded a contract with General Motors worth $1.5 billion annually.

2003

In 2003, when sales to non-GM customers were up nearly 50 percent, the company derived 82 percent of its sales from GM.

At this point, the company was supplying the driveline systems for the long-wheelbase versions of the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy sport utility vehicles, the Hummer H2, and the heavy-duty version of the 2003 Dodge Ram pickup truck.

By the end of 2003, AAM derived 80 percent of its revenue from products featuring new technology.

2004

2004: AAM dedicates a new world headquarters building in Detroit.

2005

AAM launched driveline system with SmartBarâ„¢ Electronic Stabilizer System for 2005 Ram Power Wagon

2006

The company received a new contract to supply GM with a new driveline system in 2006, a deal of tremendous importance to its future business.

2009

AAM's Guanajuato Manufacturing Complex North Plant was awarded the 2009 Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing

2014

MSP Industries launches production of continuously variable transmission (CVT) pulleys for Honda (2014 model year)

2017

AAM completes the acquisition of Metaldyne Performance Group Inc. (April 6, 2017)

2018

AAM's World Headquarters achieves LEED Certification through year 2018, a designation from the US Green Building Council for buildings with optimum energy, water usage and air quality efficiencies

AAM is recognized by General Motors as a 2018 Supplier of the Year for third consecutive year

2019

AAM celebrates 25th anniversary on March 1, 2019

2020

Automotive News names AAM a 2020 PACE Award Finalist for our Electric Drive Technology

Chairman and CEO David C. Dauch is named a 2020 Automotive News All Star
