TDS was established in 1968 by Chicago entrepreneur LeRoy T. Carlson who, over a period of years, assembled a small rural telephone conglomerate consisting of 50 independent companies.
By 1982 TDS had invested heavily in cable television services, operating 16 individual cable companies.
No longer able to support its growing activities in the cellular industry by itself, TDS created a separate subsidiary called United States Cellular Corporation (USCC). The new company began operations on December 23, 1983, with Rudy Hornacek, a TDS executive, as its president.
Us Cellular was founded in the year 1983.
In October 1984, before the FCC formally granted the licenses, USCC began to assemble its management team.
By March 1985 the senior management of TDS had become convinced that the cellular industry was poised for tremendous growth.
USCC’s Knoxville system commenced in June 1985, and its Tulsa system went on line in August.
The company finally went forward with its public share offering on May 4, 1988.
By December 1988, USCC was active in 31 MS As, including Wichita, Atlantic City, and Columbia, Missouri.
Moreover, USCC’s clusters enabled the company to “capture economies of scale in system operations, marketing, and consumer service functions,” Donald Nelson explained to the November 16, 1992, Wall Street Journal.

In 1993 USCC had interests in 193 cellular systems, 129 of which it had a hand in managing.

USCC’s subscriber base rose 66 percent in 1995 alone.
The company was a subsidiary of the Telephone and Data Systems or commonly known as TDS. In the year 1998, the company launched its first e-commerce website.
By the end of 1998, digital service was available to 28 percent of US-CC’s customers in 11 clusters.
The Motorola StarTac was the first portable to weigh less than a pound, and that came out in 1999.
The $610 million deal gave it access to Chicago, one of the largest markets in the United States. It strengthened its foothold in Nebraska, Iowa, and central Illinois through a $74 million purchase of PCS licenses from McLeod USA Inc. in 2001.

The company continued to expand its wireless footprint in 2006.
The average revenue generated by the company in the third quarter of 2007 per user was more than $52.
In the year 2008, the company launched its 3G mobile services to its customers, the next year, it also started its broadband services as well.
In the year 2011, the company was responsible for launching the first Windows Phone 7 device in the USA, known as at the HTC 7 Pro.
By the year 2012, the company planned to sell its various cellular markets to Sprint Nextel.
As of the year 2016, Google collaborated with US Cellular to launch the Google Project Fi program - along with companies like Sprint Corporation and T-Mobile US. The headquarters of the company is based in 8410 West Bryn Mawr Avenue.
