1911

1911: General Electric starts selling home refrigerators for $1,000, twice the cost of the average automobile.

1916

The chemistry of soap manufacturing stayed essentially the same until 1916.

1927

1927: Cleanliness Institute was created to teach the value of hygiene in schools

1929

American Wax Company was founded in New York City in 1929.

1930

1930: Bendix Corp. develops an automatic washer that cleans and spins clothes, eliminating dangerous wringers.

1960

The name was changed to The Soap and Detergent Association around 1960 to reflect the evolution of cleaning products from strictly soap-based to include those based on synthetic surface active agents.

2010

Recognizing the need to rebrand itself in order to better represent all of the products it represented, SDA changed its name to the American Cleaning Institute in January 2010.

2014

But women still do most of the chores, according to the American Time Use Survey released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2014.
