American Flyers company history timeline

1939

American Flyers has been training pilots since 1939 and has earned a worldwide reputation of being the premier school for flight training education.

1947

In 1947, I.H. Montgomery founded Aviation Training Enterprises (A.T.E) at Midway Airport in Illinois.

1960

In 1960, American Flyers Airline purchased four Lockheed Constellations from Delta Airlines, two L-049 models and two L-149 models, with the L-149’s having increased range and fuel capacity.

1964

In 1964, the airline flew the Beatles on their first US tour.

In 1964 “The Beatles” contracted American Flyers to fly them on their first tour in the United States.

1966

In 1966 American Flyers Airline added four more Lockheed Electra’s and began receiving contracts from the United States Air Force “Military Airlift Command” to transport troops.

1969

Doc Elliot Doc Elliott started as flight instructor out of Midway airport back in 1969.

1970

By 1970, American Flyers was operating just two leased Douglas DC-8 Series 63CF having sold the Electras and later the Boeing 727s.

1971

AFA was taken over by Universal Airlines on May 25, 1971, which in turn was absorbed by Saturn Airways the next year.

1978

Dave Menconi Dave Menconi started years ago at Midway airport in 1978 as a flight instructor.

1980

In 1980, American Flyers’ flight school merged with Aviation Training Enterprises (ATE) who kept the American Flyers name and great traditions of excellence in flight training, expanding all over the United States.

1989

Mike Bliss Mike Bliss started working for American Flyers in 1989 as a flight instructor at our school in Addison, Texas.
