American Montessori Society company history timeline

1960

Six months later, in 1960, and with the vigorous support of parent-advocates, Nancy Rambusch founded the American Montessori Society.

As other parents learned about Whitby’s unique education, the school rapidly attracted more students and the first official Whitby campus was established in 1960.

1961

In 1961, Time magazine featured Rambusch, Whitby School, and the American Montessori revival in its May 12 issue.

1962

Additional publicity in the media, including Newsweek, the New York Times, and the Saturday Evening Post, as well as the publication in 1962 of Rambusch's book, Learning How to Learn, led to growth in the number of American Montessori schools and students.

1963

Also in 1963, the national office of AMS moved from Greenwich to New York City, where it has since remained.

1979

The society was very proud of the success of its first International Symposium, held in Athens in 1979, which featured as speakers several internationally renowned educators and scholars.
