The first wing, the Romanesque Revival exposure running along West 77th Street, dates from 1872 and is based on a design by Calvert Vaux and J. Wrey Mould.

The first building of the current museum’s complex was a Gothic-revival construction built in 1874 after a design by architects Calvert Vaux and J. Wrey Mould.

In 1892 the two turrets, central granite stairway and arcade of arches were added based on a design by J. C. Cady & Co. It was acquired in 1883 was created by craftsmen from more than one of the First Nations of British Columbia.

In 1894 he began devoting half his time to the curatorship in anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History, New York City, and was influential in dispatching the productive Jesup North Pacific Expedition to northeastern Asia and northwestern North America.

The Mongolian Academy of Sciences invites the Museum to take part in a joint paleontological expedition to the Gobi, the first such expedition to include Western scientists since the Central Asiatic Expedition in the 1920s.

Andrews and his team work there until the border between China and Outer Mongolia closes in 1930.

The hall is renovated in 1969 to include a 94-foot-long model of a blue whale suspended from the ceiling.

The Hall of Pacific Peoples opens on the third floor, reopens as Margaret Mead Hall of Pacific Peoples in 1984.

Enclosing a great white sphere, it opened to international acclaim in early 2000.

In 2006, the Museum established the Richard Gilder Graduate School which includes a Ph.D. granting program in comparative biology within the Museum.

In 2015, the Museum began granting a Master of Arts in Teaching degree, and its Charter was further amended by the Board of Regents of the State of New York as follows:

A new 245,000-square-foot educational facility, the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation, designed by Studio Gang Architects and Ralph Appelbaum Associates, is scheduled for opening in 2019.
