1888

SUZANNE SNIDER (Legal Affairs): Well, according to legend it was first invented around 1888 by Thomas Holley, who was 24 years old at the time and was working at a paper mill in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

Originally established in the 19th century, Ampad invented the legal pad in 1888.

1900

And this later evolved into the legal pad in about 1900 when a local judge requested a margin be drawn on the left side, and that was the first legal pad.

1986

In 1986, Ampad found itself a subsidiary of Mead Corporation.

Known as the Ampad Holding Corporation, the company was purchased in 1986 by the Mead Corporation.

1987

Much consolidation also occurred within distribution channels. For example, in 1987 there were more than 13,000 office products distributors.

1994

In July 1994, American Pad & Paper acquired SCM, a hanging folder and writing products company.

1995

Beginning in 1995, the company instituted new pricing policies that set product prices consistent with the cost of paper at the time of shipment.

In 1995 Niagra's net sales totaled $106 million, and its operating income was $8.5 million.

1996

By 1996, American Pad & Paper offered its customers more than 800 SKUs of filing supplies, including file folders, hanging files, index cards, and expandable folders.

In fact, Staples alone accounted for 10.8 percent of net sales in 1996.

Headed by president and chief operating officer Russell M. Gard, the team had more than 85 years of experience in management in the paper industry in 1996.

In 1996 the company expected its business with large customers to grow 15 to 35 percent in the upcoming five years.

1997

In February 1997 American Pad & Paper acquired Shade/Allied, Inc., for nearly $50 million.

American Pad & Paper also became one of the larger manufacturers of invitations, announcements, Christmas and holiday cards, and presentation folders in 1997.

2003

After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Ampad was acquired in 2003 by an affiliate of Crescent Capital Investments, later renamed Arcapita.

2005

Ampad's current president and CEO, Donald Meltzer, joined the company in August 2005, having formerly served as vice president and general manager of the Roofing Systems Group at Johns-Manville, and before that as the Executive Vice President and COO of Clore Automotive.

2014

In July 2014, it was sold to TOPS Products.
