American Printworks company history timeline

1807

In many ways, the history of Cranston is the history of the American Industrial Revolution… Our roots go back to 1807 and to the establishment of a tiny cotton printing plant founded by a Rhode Island governor, William Sprague.

1810

Cotton cloth was imported and weaving was still done by hand and at home until around 1810.

1812

Cocheco Manufacturing Company started out as the Dover Cotton Factory in 1812.

1813

Longstanding, successful printwork companies began at Waltham in 1813.

1815

They did not begin producing cotton fabric until 1815, when they spun yarn and changed their name to Dover Manufacturing Company.

1822

The largest complex in Lowell, MA, began in 1822.

1874

Rebuilding commenced immediately and by 1874 the complex was expanded and almost complete.

1900

By 1900 Cocheco printed more than 50 million yards of fabric each year.

1905

By 1905, the business was the single largest employer in North Adams.

1909

Pacific Mills had taken them over in 1909, and shut down the printing operations three years later.

1936

Capacity increased greatly in 1936 with the purchase of the Slater East Village mill and print works in Webster, Massachusetts.

1949

In 1949, Cranston boosted capacity still further by opening a plant in Fletcher, North Carolina.
