Two women, Mary Calkins and Christine Ladd-Franklin, were elected members in 1893.

Since 1894 the APA has published abstracts of the world’s scientific and professional literature in psychology.

Carmichael received his Ph.D. from Harvard University (1924) and was teacher of psychology at Princeton, Brown, and Rochester successively.

The APA Publication Manual, its handbook of writing standards for published articles, first appeared in 1929 and has become the standard for professional writing in many fields.

In 1945 the member organizations of the coordinating committee enacted a plan to preserve the harmony of the war years by creating a reorganized APA, governed by a council of representatives of divisions and state and provincial associations and administered by a board of directors.

Since 1970, PsychINFO, a worldwide computer database, has provided references in psychology and related behavioral and social sciences.

Finally historian Laura Stark, writing in Inside Higher Ed, explains “Why Ethics Codes Fail.” Stark, having previously written about the first ethics code adopted by the APA in 1973, argues that,

To mark the 125th anniversary of the American Psychological Association (APA) the APA is releasing 125 Years of the American Psychological Association, an updated version of a volume first released in 1992 to mark the association’s centenary.

The APA constitution provides for the creation of new divisions, and by 2006 the number of divisions had grown to fifty-six.
