ASHA was founded in 1925 as the American Academy of Speech Correction.
ASHA has been the leader of these professions for almost 100 years, initiating the development of national standards for audiologist and speech-language pathologist certification since 1952.
It wasn’t until the late 1960’s that a distinction between speech disorders and language disorders was recognized.
The current name was adopted in 1978.
ASHA has grown exponentially since its inception—from 25 charter members in the beginning to 223,000 members in 2021.
