American Tower company history timeline

1995

The company was formed in 1995 as a unit of American Radio Systems.

1997

During that year, however, the company entered into several other agreements that were consummated in 1997. For example, in May 1997 the company acquired 21 tower sites and a tower-site-management business operating in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina and bought three other tower sites in Massachusetts.

During October 1997 ATS acquired Jamieson, Pennsylvania-based MicroNet, Inc., one of the leading providers of antennae sites in densely populated areas of the mid-Atlantic states. Thus, in a few years ATS defined a national base to conduct business in the evolving field of telecommunication technologies: at the end of fiscal 1997, the company operated more than 1,775 towers in 44 states and the District of Columbia.

1998

1998: Establishing a National Footprint

In 1998, American Radio Systems merged with CBS Corporation and completed the corporate spin-off of American Tower.

1999

During January 1999 ATC began what would prove to be a banner year.

In April 1999, ATC's Broadcast Tower Group contracted with Sinclair Broadcast Group, a leading owner of television and radio stations in the United States, to develop broadcasting towers for Sinclair's digital transmission needs in 11 markets.

2000

As of 2000, ATC Teleports in New York also housed Pronto's switch at 60 Hudson Street in New York.

2001

Next came the acquisition of 192 wireless communication towers from Triton PCS (part of AT & T Wireless Network) and also a contract to develop a minimum of 100 build-to-suit towers and to provide turnkey services for co-location sites through 2001.

2005

In 2005, American Tower acquired SpectraSite Communications, expanding its global portfolio to over 22,000 owned communications sites including over 21,000 wireless towers, 400 broadcast towers and 100 in-building DAS (Distributed Antenna System) sites.

2013

In 2013, the company acquired Global Tower Partners for $4.8 billion.

2016

The Company also expands its presence to Argentina with the acquisition of a portfolio of urban telecommunications assets in the country.The National Association of Corporate Directors, New England Chapter, named our Board as the “2016 Public Company Board of the Year.”
