The work began in 1925 and, according to historians, became one of the havens for the elite of Detroit to get away from the daily grind.
1926 - Construction begins on the clubhouse & golf course
Western has been the site of many notable matches and tournaments throughout its history beginning with its inaugural match on April 28, 1927.
June 4, 1927 The Club's Grand Opening
Invitations were sent out to new and prospective members to attend an informal Saturday evening dinner dance to be held on June 4th, 1927, followed the next day by an afternoon tea.
Indianwood quickly grew with the installation of a landing field for airplanes in 1928, and was the host of the Michigan Open in the same year.
The spotlight of the golf world turned to the little village of Lake Orion in 1930 when the Western Golf Association brought the third largest tournament in the world (at that time) to Indianwood.
In the 1930’s, a toboggan slide was built where today's swimming pool is located.
The club became so successful that officials raised green fees in 1938 - $1.00 on weekends and 75 cents on weekdays.
A major change in Indianwood came in 1942 when businessman Carl Ruebelman bought the club and converted it to a private facility with all the amenities.
In May of 1945, the B.E. Taylor Company agreed to sell the Club to its members.
In 1945, 118 Charter Members were already on board.
Until October of 1950, the Club had been re-incorporated under the name of the Western Lands Company and, after securing a new mortgage for $35,000, it then became, as it is known today, the Western Golf & Country Club.
The Club also decided to put the golf course to the test for the State's top golfers for the second time by submitting a bid for the 1951 Michigan Open.
On June 19, 1952 a new swimming pool and pool house opened.
The 1960's and 70's saw Indianwood slowly slide into oblivion in Detroit-area golf circles.
The Western Open was held in 1960 and, once again, a playoff was needed to determine its eventual winner.
The dynamic turnaround for the club came on February 20, 1981.
Under the leadership of owner Stan Aldridge, Indianwood has climbed from the edge of non-existence in 1981 to the current magnificent facility which has hosted two United States Women's Open Championships and one United States Senior Open Championship.
Katie worked on the United States Women's Open in 1994 and son Keith spent many summers helping at the club while away from playing collegiate hockey at Lake Superior State University in Northern Michigan.
Keith has taken over the day to day operations, Kelly will be the 2012 US Senior Open Tournament Director and Kevin with his golf course construction background will be updating the “OLD” course, changes that the USGA has recommended for the championship.
