AMG Engineering history

AMG became an engine manufacturer in 1984 due to an innovation: Melcher developed a completely independent cylinder head with four valves per cylinder.

In 1986, AMG produced the “Hammer,” which featured a Mercedes E-Class car with an AMG 5.0 liter V-8 complete with quad-valve technology under the hood.

FMC operated the facility until 1987, when Shieldalloy Metallurgical Corporation (SMC), a subsidiary of Metallurg, Inc. and predecessor company of AMG Vanadium LLC (AMG V) acquired the business.

Further expansion led to the opening of a third plant in 1990 and an increase in the workforce to 400 employees.

However, SMC recognized disadvantages with the facility’s raw material supply and began making changes in this area and the product mix in addition to completing expansion updates such as commissioning a new roaster in 1991.

1993$100M ProjectAMG begins work on its first $100 million constructed value project, an ethanol production facility in Nebraska.

In addition, AMG has been providing both the Formula 1 Safety Car and the Formula 1 Medical Car since 1996.

Hans Werner Aufrecht transferred a majority stake in the steadily growing company to DaimlerChrysler AG on January 1, 1999.

In 2001, Sudamin acquired PCDL Lucette, a competing French antimony trioxide producer, and significantly expanded its antimony trioxide presence and market capacity with the acquisition of another French producer.

On January 1, 2005 DaimlerChrysler acquired 100 per cent of the shares.

The Mercedes-AMG brand is also represented in Formula 1 in the 2012 season by the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport team and the engine manufacturer Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains.

In 2016, ALD acquired the remaining 50% share of its joint venture company, ALD-Holcroft Co.
