AMG Industries company history timeline

1966

In late 1966 he left Mercedes-Benz and persuaded Melcher to venture into a shared business with him.

1967

Founded in 1967 by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, AMG started by building and tuning engines, expanding into customising Mercedes-Benz vehicles and producing unofficial accessory and upgrade packs.

1971

In 1971, AMG turned the motor racing world upside down, taking a Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3 V8 executive sedan and transforming it into the 6.8-litre 'Red Pig'. The car cemented itself in history by finishing second at the 24 Hours of Spa, beating much lighter sports cars from rival manufacturers.

1976

In 1976, Mercedes-AMG, together with about a dozen employees, moved to a purpose-built workshop and office space in Affalterbach.

1984

AMG became an engine manufacturer in 1984 due to an innovation: Melcher developed a completely independent cylinder head with four valves per cylinder.

1990

Further expansion led to the opening of a third plant in 1990 and an increase in the workforce to 400 employees.

The year 1990 – when the cooperation contract was concluded with Daimler-Benz AG – represents a true milestone in AMG history.

1993

The C 36 AMG of 1993 was the first AMG car to be developed by both AMG and Mercedes-Benz.

1996

In addition, AMG has been providing both the Formula 1 Safety Car and the Formula 1 Medical Car since 1996.

1999

Hans Werner Aufrecht transferred a majority stake in the steadily growing company to DaimlerChrysler AG on January 1, 1999.

2002

The E 55 AMG (E-Class) came along in 2002 and was somewhat of a super-saloon, allowing for incredible comfort, as well as unbelievable performance when required.

2005

On January 1, 2005 DaimlerChrysler acquired 100 per cent of the shares.

2007

In 2007 the second Black Series was born, the larger, more aggressive Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG Black Series.

2008

A 199mph, 0 to 62mhp in 3.8 seconds SL 65 AMG Black Series also came along in 2008, ensuring a comprehensive decade for flagship AMG Black Series cars.

2011

2011 saw what is now arguably one of the most celebrated AMG models in the form of the C 63 AMG Coupe.

2011 also saw the next instalment of the Black Series AMG, the 512bhp C 63 Black Series.

2012

The Mercedes-AMG brand is also represented in Formula 1 in the 2012 season by the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport team and the engine manufacturer Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains.

2013

The fifth AMG Black Series also came along in this era, in the form of the SLS AMG Black Series, which was launched in 2013.

2017

Gemäß WLTP. Stromverbrauch und Reichweite wurden auf Grundlage der VO 2017/1151/EU ermittelt.

2021
