Other Duties
* May perform basic repair and maintenance functions, such as fix broken items, furniture and equipment; secure buildings for winter; install or remove window coverings, storm or screen windows and doors, and replace light bulbs; and other minor maintenance work as assigned.
* Operate industrial equipment such as boilers, snow blower, floor buffing machines, and air conditioning and ventilation systems. May replace heating/ventilation filters and perform routine system maintenance; move, set-up and tear down furniture and appliances, equipment and voting polls; polish furniture and metal work..
* Maintain established quality and quantity standards. Follow prescribed safety precautions, established department and Town policies; procedures, rules and regulations are followed. Detect and report improper operations, faulty equipment, defective materials and unusual conditions. Maintain work areas and equipment in a clean, orderly, operational and safe condition.
* Respond to emergency calls at night and on weekends and holidays as needed.
* Provide back-up coverage as needed.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
* Knowledge of materials, methods and techniques of the trade.
* Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

Education and Experience

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The custodian performs general custodial duties in accordance with department procedures as well as: assists in event services support, summer cleaning and maintenance programs, furniture moves, and other departmental, program, and institutional support consistent with general nature of job duties. Custodial workers will act as independent entity in the maintenance and care of campus buildings as assigned while being a team member for group tasks as assigned. Custodial workers are expected to think and act proactively in the maintenance and care of their building(s). Custodial workers participate in active on-call program rotation at times, and the snow removal program, and are considered essential personnel. Custodians must obtain and keep current certifications as required for the performance of their job duties and supported by the College. This position requires a pre-employment physical with lift test.
This position is also essential to student and community service and experience. As a member of the facilities team, the incumbent must feel comfortable working in an evolving, face-paced organizational framework with shifting responsibilities. This position collaborates with other facilities staff, and a variety of offices to meet the department goals, and further the mission of the facilities department. The incumbent will participate as a committed member of the facilities team in college and department work, projects, meetings, events, and overall community development: assists in the coordination and facilitation of work and services for students and other community members.

Some evening and weekend work can be expected on a regular basis (i.e. more than twice per month).
There is a high probability that contact with blood-borne materials will occur within daily duties. All duties and procedures are to be performed within health safety standards as established by local and state OSHA and school district emergency procedures.
Equipment Used:
The custodian should expect to move, operate, and clean various manually powered brooms, mops, vacuums, dusting tools, and snow shovels as well as mechanically powered waxing and buffing equipment, lawn-mowers and grass trimmers. He/she will be expected to climb and work from ladders as necessary. The custodian will also handle and apply chemical cleaning agents, some of which may be toxic if handled improperly. All custodial staff will undergo training with regard to equipment and chemical use.
General Qualifications:
To be eligible for employment as a custodian, a person shall demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to complete the assigned work efficiently. The person must be able to operate, maintain, and make adjustments to various types of equipment, as needed. He/she must also have the ability to pass a written and physical test, as well as establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community. He/she is required to perform duties within the expectations of all district requirements and school committee policies. He/she must understand proper procedures, handbook rules, school schedules, (i.e., practice times, game times - both home and away) and maintain confidentiality with regard to students and staff. He/she must also be available for duties on some Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and evenings as assigned.
Moreover, the individual must be adaptable to working around children and possess skills for maintaining school buildings in a manner acceptable to the general health and safety standards of school buildings. He/.she must also develop a basic understanding of the following areas: school committee policies and procedures, school public relations, the role of public schools in the community, safe operation of mechanical equipment, and the importance of developing constructive working relationships with supervisors, fellow workers, students, the general public and visitors to the school.

* Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent, and interpret bar graphs.
* Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
* Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standard situations.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, including cleaning supplies, pails, and bags/boxes. Occasionally, the employee will lift or move up to 80 pounds, including bags of salt and furniture. The employee will sometimes push or pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines, etc. This job requires close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Essential functions:
Daily cleaning of buildings includes dusting, cleaning windows, floors, walls, and furniture, restroom fixtures, toilets, sinks, etc. Includes the use of custodial tools and equipment.
Custodians are responsible for maintaining the interior spaces from the ceiling to the floor. This includes but not limited to cleaning light fixtures and replacing light bulbs, cleaning HVAC supply and return vents, and changing HVAC filters depending on their location.

Physical requirements include but are not limited to safely pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, stooping, walking, carrying, climbing, and regularly lifting up to 50 pounds; possess eye/hand/foot coordination sufficient to operate equipment, tools, etc.

Phillips Academy seeks an evening custodian to clean and maintain Academy buildings by performing routine and specialized cleaning of academic and non academic spaces and maintain a clean, safe, sanitary and attractive environment.
Schedule:
Monday through Friday 3pm to 11:30pm plus overtime as required.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Sweeping, mopping, dusting/washing furniture, vacuuming floors and surfaces and restocking restroom and kitchen areas.
Responsible for sanitizing bathroom surfaces, fixtures, and food handling areas.
Emptying trash and recycling receptacles and moving the trash and recyclables to the appropriate pick-up points.
Strip, wax and burnish floors using power floor machines, as well as operate heavy-duty wet pick-up machines to remove liquids form floor surfaces.
Requirements:
Valid driver's license, personal vehicle for on-campus transportation required and full background check required.
Must be able to work well with the general school community.
Must be able to perform all aspects of custodial services.
Be able to respond to changing and/or short notice custodial service requirements.
Prior floor care and cleaning experience preferred.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to carry out the duties of the position.
When emergencies and/or extreme weather conditions occur, the functions of this job may be deemed essential, and employee must report to work and/or remain on duty during their regularly scheduled work hours or the work hours designated by their supervisor. Supervisor will inform the employee when the functions are essential.
