Andrews University company history timeline
Since 1874 the academy had only been known as the secondary school serving children of faculty, children who lived in or near Berrien Springs, and whoever else wanted what the school had to offer.
From the very start, back in 1874, Andrews University has been on an ongoing journey to understand, pursue and best implement serious scholarship, quality research and practical Christianity as a core strength of the University's curriculum.
In 1901, the school moved from Battle Creek, Michigan to its current location in Berrien Springs.
The school traces its origin to 1908 with the establishment of the Commercial Department of Emmanuel Missionary College.
The other library collection was that of the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, which was established in Washington, D.C. in 1937.
Numbering slightly over 2,100 books in 1940, the collection grew dramatically in the following two decades thanks to sound acquisitions and numerous donations.
In 1956, denominational leaders decided to organize a university in order to train elementary and secondary teachers in an Adventist school rather than send them to an unaffiliated university which did not promote a denominational perspective.."
At the 1958 Autumn Council, held in Washington, the board of Emmanuel Missionary College invited the General Conference to locate Potomac University on its campus.
The following events culminated in relocating the graduate program and theological seminary of Potomac University from Washington, D.C. and joining with the school in Berrien Springs in 1959.
In 1959, H. L. Rudy, a vice-president for the SDA General Conference, described the relationship of the new graduate university with Emmanuel Missionary College:
The secondary school was called Emmanuel Missionary College Academy, a name it retained until 1960.
The 1960-61 academic year saw the relocation of the Seminary to Berrien Springs, Michigan, and a merger of the two collections under one roof the following year.
Because of the addition of the graduate programs and the seminary in 1960, the school was renamed "Andrews University" in honor of John Nevins Andrews, an Adventist scholar and the first officially sponsored overseas missionary for the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
When it opened in 1962, JWL housed over 120,000 volumes and 1,000 periodical titles.
By the fall of 1971, those plans resulted in the establishment of Andrews University Press.
The "new" Andrews Academy began operation in September of 1978.
The School of Business Administration, which evolved from the Department of Business Administration, was established in 1980.
The present organizational structure of the School of Graduate Studies was adopted in 1987.
On Thursday, April 11, 2007, President Niels-Erik Andreasen announced at a special chapel assembly that the university had just received a gift totaling $8.5 million.
Griggs University joined Andrews in 2011 to become the School of Distance Education.
At the same time existing and new programs in technology were restructured and a new School of Health Professions was opened in 2012.
