Denied an ushering job, a young man fired four shots at Frain in a greasy spoon near the Chicago Stadium in 1933. "The bullets went between Frain's legs and he was unhurt," the Tribune noted.

Alums asked reporters to prominently include their Frain credentials. "The candidate for clerk of the Probate court is Jerome C. Slad, a onetime Andy Frain usher," a Tribune 1955 account began, noting several paragraphs later that he was also a DePaul University alum and Army veteran.

When his wife, Lillian, died in a 1960 airplane crash, his lawsuit against Northwest Airlines was handled by a pair of attorneys who had been ushers.

The learning curve was shortened during World War II, when female "usherettes" necessarily filled the ranks. (That ended when the war did; Frain didn't welcome them back into the ranks until 1961.)
