In 1924, Angelo's Civita Farnese Restaurant opened its doors on Atwells Avenue.
Way back in 1939, my grandparents, Angelo and Giacomina Passalacqua, opened a small neighborhood tavern at 955 West Chestnut Street in Washington, Pa.
The name of the restaurant was changed to Angelo’s in 1958, and the place was remodeled and a full menu was added.
In 1959, Salvatore Cusumano was struggling to provide for his wife and two sons while living in Sicily, Italy.
When Regakis started in business in 1978, his hamburger operation was so small the Coca-Cola Co. wouldn’t install menu boards and a soda-fountain dispenser without a hefty monthly charge – a service Coke and other soft drink companies provide to most high-volume businesses for little or no charge.
He employs more than 70 people and has served millions of burgers since he turned on his first grill in 1978.
In 1981, my aunt retired and my dad became the sole proprietor of Angelo’s.
Regakis opened his second restaurant on North Hill Street in 1991, remodeling what is recalled as a somewhat notorious drive-in cafe.
The restaurant was reopened in 2000 after being purchased by Angelo Tsipis.
In 2006, Antignano renovated Angelo's, bringing the restaurant back to its traditional past and continuing the welcoming tradition for a new generation.

In the Gulf of Mexico, the ship was attacked by to English privateers, the White Lion and Treasurer, and robbed of 50-60 Africans. It was late August 2019 and John Rolfe, a planter and merchant, reported on the arrival of the White Lion noting that “20 and odd Negroes” were “bought for victuals.” The Treasurer arrived at Point Comfort a few days later, and likely sold a number of Africans before leaving for Bermuda.
