About Tazewell County:

Responsibilities:
- Respond to calls for service including animal bites, cruelty and neglect investigations, stray animals, sick/injured animals, and nuisance complaints.
- Respond to calls for service from citizens, law enforcement, emergency agencies, and other authorities requesting assistance from Animal Control.
- Apprehend and impound stray, unleashed, vicious, dead animals, and those suspected of having rabies.
- Rescue and impound sick, inured, and abused animals.
- Remove wild/exotic animals from homes and businesses.
- Enforce animal control and rabies ordinances.
- Retrieve and enter information on pets, pet owners, citations, bite reports, and other situations onto the computer system.
- Complete and submit written reports to describe activities and actions.
- Maintain care of the animal control vehicle and equipment.
- Perform on call standby after work hours for emergency situations.
- Euthanize animals in emergency situations.
- Appear and testify in court as needed.
- Perform other assigned tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED with one year related experience and/or training
- Valid Driver’s License
- Ability to respond calmly during emergencies
- Humane and caring attitude towards animals at all times

Description Responsible for enforcing ordinances and statutes related to the control of wild and domestic animals. Captures, confines, and euthanizes stray, diseased, and destructive animals including domestic and wild animals, fowl and livestock. Ensure animals are properly vaccinated and registered. Maintains a variety of files and records. Deals tactfully, courteously, and firmly when in contact with animal owners and the general public. Hours of work are normally evenings, nights, and weekends with occasional duties and activities during weekdays. Incumbent is also required to be on call and receives $1.50/hour on-call pay in addition to the hourly rate.
Minimum Qualifications High school graduate or equivalent, and 1 to 2 years experience in animal control work or similar work involving contact with animals; or any combination of training and experience.
Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and acceptable driving record mandatory.
Must be willing to obtain special armed Conservator of the Peace status.
Successful completion of Virginia Animal Control Officer's School and/or training as required. Training is conducted Monday through Friday for approximately four to six weeks.
