1988

1988 - Petco's dynamic growth as a major retailer starts when the company acquires two pet supply chains, WellPoint and the Pet Department, more than tripling the number of Petco stores from 40 to 130 and expanding the company's footprint in Oregon and into Washington and Texas.

1990

Brian K. Devine joined Petco in August 1990, bringing with him 20 years of retail experience.

1991

By the end of 1991, the company had established 37 superstores, recording sufficient success with the new format to convince executives to direct expansion efforts toward the establishment of additional superstores.

1991 - The company introduces Red Ruff and Blue Mews as its official logo mascots.

1992

By the end of 1992, there were 208 Petco stores in operation, 76 of which were superstores.

1994

Petco's IPO was completed in March 1994, giving the company the financial resources to step up its expansion, something Devine intended to do through acquisitions of smaller pet merchandise chains.

1995

1995 - Petco rolls out grooming services for customers in stores nationwide.

1997

Problems surfaced after the company registered an aggressive year of expansion in 1997, when 104 stores were added to the chain, with the majority of the new units coming from the acquisition of the 81-store PetCare chain, which operated in nine midwestern and southern states.

1997 - Petco launches Petco Animal Lovers Save – PALS – the pet industry's first customer loyalty program.

1998

During the first half of 1998, Petco racked up more than $8 million in net losses.

2000

2000 - Petco goes private in leveraged buyout by Leonard Green Partners and Texas Pacific Group.

2001

2001 - Petco.com is launched, offering online shoppers an expansive selection of products and services.

2002

2002 - Petco again becomes publicly traded and grows to more than 600 stores in 48 states.

By 2002, the Devine-led enterprise was ready to sell itself on Wall Street again.

2005

By March 2005, the Pisces format had been incorporated in nearly 70 stores, with plans calling for more than 100 Petco stores to use the concept by the end of 2005.

2006

2006 - Petco grows to 800 stores in 49 states and more than 18,000 associates nationwide.

2008

2008 - The first Petco store opens in Hawaii expanding Petco's "paw print" into all 50 United States.

2009

2009 - Petco Love (formerly Petco Foundation) celebrates its tenth anniversary, surpasses $50 million donated to animal welfare partners across the United States Petco introduces Unleashed by Petco, a small format store with a limited, high-end assortment and friendly neighborhood feel.

2010

2010 - Petco and Petco Love (formerly Petco Foundation) partner to launch the first National Pet Food Bank, designed to help financially struggling families keep their pets.

2012

2012 - Petco opens its first store in Puerto Rico in December.

2014

2014 - Petco Park celebrates its 10th Anniversary and Petco Love (formerly Petco Foundation) donates $10,000 to the San Diego Humane Society in honor of the 10-year partnership and shared commitment to animal welfare in Petco's hometown.

2017

2017- In the summer, Petco Love (formerly Petco Foundation) surpasses $200 million raised for animals in need.

2020

In September 2020, the company launches Vital Care, a groundbreaking paid wellness plan providing pet parents with a convenient, affordable way to meet pets’ routine wellness needs.
