Julia Foster Porter opened the original hospital in 1882 after her 13-year-old son, Maurice, died of rheumatic fever, and she realized there was no hospital in Illinois that specialized in treating children.
Doctor Howard Rice founded Town & Country Pediatrics as a solo practice on Chicago’s North Side in 1972.
The Children's Trust Award, established in 1988, is an exclusive award that is bestowed upon those individuals whose work is of such magnitude that millions of young people have benefitted.
Formerly Children's Memorial Hospital, the facility moved from its 130-year Lincoln Park home to downtown Chicago on June 9, 2012.
At the turn of the century, the hospital moved to the parcel of land in Lincoln Park where it stood until it moved to Streeterville in 2012, and was renamed the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital.
Lurie Children's is ranked as one of the nation's top children's hospitals in the United StatesNews & World Report 2012-13 Honor Roll rankings.
