Annapolis Yacht Club company history timeline

1937

With renewal in mind, in 1937 the Annapolis Yacht Club was incorporated and the first formal regatta (Annual) was held that year.

1940

The Fall Series first year was in 1940 with five boats competing.

1947

The Annapolis to Newport Race (Newport to Annapolis back then) started in 1947 and has been run every two years since.

1948

The Junior Fleet The Junior Fleet started in 1948 with six Dolphin sailboats.

1953

In 1953, the first Fleet Trophy was presented to Nancy Scofield, and interest in the Junior Fleet brought hundreds of young sailors onto the water.

1954

Annapolis Yacht Club . The Association was incorporated on October 28th, 1954 by John J. Hopkins, Richard C. Bartlett, and Robert F. Podlich.

Established in autumn 1954, Severn Sailing Association has led the way in one-design sailboat racing on Chesapeake Bay.

1958

In 1958, the founders of SSA bought its current property on Sycamore Point in Eastport, at 311-315 First Street.

1959

List of Prior Winners, Perpetual Trophies - Deeds & Descriptions Seafarers Yacht Club of Annapolis is a private yacht club based in Annapolis, Maryland, that has been in operation since 1959.

A Need for Growth By 1959, membership had risen to 1000 and a new club building was badly needed.

1960

The Seafarers Club is the Eastport-based yacht club founded in 1960 by a small group of African-American powerboaters who shared a universal, abiding love for the Bay.

1965

In 1965, the new Annapolis Yacht was said to be the largest in the United States.

1966

Starting on January 1, 1966, it has continued to be sailed on New Year’s Day.

The current two-story clubhouse, with its priceless vista of the junction of Spa Creek and the Severn River, was completed in early 1966.

1969

Frostbite and Wednesday Night Racing soon demanded more club social space, and the Skipjack Lounge was finished in 1969.

The land across the Eastport Bridge was purchased in 1969.

1980

Eastport Yacht Club began at a meeting at the former Marmaduke's Pub on October 13, 1980, where 83 men and women became the charter members.

1983

In 1983, EYC had its first temporary quarters in an upper floor office in the City Marina.

1989

In 1989, after years of searching, they bought a small waterfront property on Sycamore Point at 317 First Street, next door to Severn Sailing Association.

1991

The club’s first official one-design fleet, the J/22, was started in 1991 with a crane added to Harborside for launching of the boats.

1992

The present clubhouse opened in October of 1992.

1995

The junior fleet was established there and a new building for them was completed in 1995.

2000

The AAYC was Founded in 2000.

2015

And now Ellis is leading the club through the re-opening after a plastic Christmas tree destroyed the interior of the building in December 2015.

The original building at 2 Compromise Street several minutes away caught on fire Dec 12,2015, after a Christmas Tree with built in light set a blaze, and burned down.

2017
