Title Code: TeacherAssistant: Special Education Job Details: This position is at a Title I school which requires at least 48 college credits or the passing of the Parapro exam in addition to any other requirements noted in the job description below.
Performs duties under the direction of the classroom teacher and/or service provider to provide support and assist with the instructional program within the assigned school with specific responsibility for assisting in supervision and instruction of students with disabilities; observing and documenting student progress; implementing plans for instruction; and assisting students by providing for special health care needs and behavioral and social/emotional needs. Performs extensive and detailed data collection and documentation of each essential duty. The position may be 10 or 12 months depending on assignment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
* Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the classroom teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
* Assists in implementing instructional programs and lesson plans and provides instruction to students in a variety of individual and group activities.
* Participates in the implementation of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and behavioral plans by the IEP team for students with behavioral needs or other special conditions.
* Performs clerical tasks to assist in the preparation of instructional materials.
* Maintains data collection and documentation of activities, assignments and assistance provided to students.
* Attends meetings, professional development, medical and behavioral trainings.
* May assist with administering immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g. diapering, tube feeding, colostomy bags, medication, etc.), assists students with personal care tasks, including but not limited to, bathroom, clothing, hygiene, and toileting, and applies and removes physical therapy appliances as instructed by the service provider according to the IEP plan.
* Assists students with mobility needs such as lifting and positioning, in and out of wheelchairs; loading and unloading on the bus; transporting students in their wheelchairs in and around school and on field trips.
* Assists students with accessing their electronic communicators, switches, pointers, feeder, etc.
* Assists with pre-lunch and lunch activities and monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments.
* Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

The expectation is once accepting a summer position the staff is required to report to work for the entire summer session. Paid leave is not granted during the summer sessions and staff does not receive benefits of the regular school year (i.e. sick leave, business leave, vacation days, etc.)
Summer program staff must make a commitment to be present for the ENTIRE program including all in-service days, workdays, and student instructional days. Failure to make this commitment may impact future employment with the Summer programs.
JOB SUMMARY
Assiststeachers and other school professionals with the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities receiving services during the summer. Assists students with individual and group instructional assignments and tasks. Provides care for the physical needs of students including bathroom/toilet care. This position requires extensive walking, stooping, pushing, carrying, climbing, bending and lifting.
Additional Work Days/Hours
Based on the assignment, the following additional work days and/or hours may be required as needed:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
* Assists students on/off buses often involving lifting and pushing. Monitors entry and exit of students assuring that they get to the correct classroom.
* Assists with non-instructional self-help skills, such as dressing, toileting, and personal hygiene.
* Assists in supporting students with challenging behaviors. Reacts promptly in the event of seizures, disruptive behavior, or related situations.
* Assists in gathering materials and classroom set up.
* Establishes a positive classroom climate.
* Supports classroom instruction and implementation of instructional.
* Works collaboratively with staff; teachers and facilitators.
* Assist in maintaining order in discipline in the classroom conducive to effective learning, and monitors appropriate use and care of materials, equipment and facilities.
* Observes and gathers data (assessment, attendance) on student(s). Confers and discusses progress of student(s) with teachers and other professional staff.
* Inventory and return of instructional materials in a timely/orderly fashion.
* Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Collaborates with content teachers, and business partners to develop curriculum for advisory lessons, overlays, modules, and Signature specific courses.
Meets regularly with content team leaders to discuss curriculum delivery, adjust timelines, and identify interdisciplinary topics.
Works with the school-based team to coordinate and review curriculum implementation of content and delivery that includes systems goals to eliminate the achievement gap.
Works with other program leaders (AVID, magnets, AP, CTE, etc.) to ensure student choice and access.
Meets regularly with SPF and Administrator Liaison for program highlights and updates to disseminate to all faculty members.

Serves as the primary student contact for Signature related coursework.
Assists feeder middle schools with recruiting incoming 9th graders, and in-house recruitment for prospective students in current 9-12 classes.
Collaborates with the school-based team to identify, plan, and coordinate speakers, field trips and work-based opportunities - mock interviews, internships, mentors, job-shadowing.
Collects data and works with the school-based team to analyze such data for student achievement and program improvement.

The expectation is once accepting a summer position the staff is required to report to work for the entire summer session. Paid leave is not granted during the summer sessions and staff does not receive benefits of the regular school year (i.e. sick leave, business leave, vacation days, etc.)
Summer program staff must make a commitment to be present for the ENTIRE program including all in-service days, workdays, and student instructional days. Failure to make this commitment may impact future employment with the Summer programs.
JOB SUMMARY
Provides instruction for Summer Program. Uses approved resources to plan instructional opportunities that addresses both academic as well as social-emotional needs of all students. Ensures active student engagement to help ensure appropriate student interactions and behaviors in classrooms and throughout the school. Promotes cooperative and collaborative relationships among and between students. Counsels students when adjustment and academic problems arise. Prepares weekly reports on student progress to share with students. Maintains attendance and other required records.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
* Plans, prepares and presents lesson plans, assignments, and instructional materials to students in an appropriate fashion.
* Develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and uses appropriate instructional materials and strategies to meet the needs of all students and engage students in selected standards.
* Monitors student progress using appropriate assessment techniques (graded assignments and assessments as well as through running records and note), prepares weekly parent update on student progress.
* Maintains order and discipline in the classroom conducive to effective learning and supervises students in a variety of school related settings, monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.
* Assists with non-instructional self-help skills, such as dressing, toileting, and personal hygiene.
* Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and the emotional development of children.
* Keeps attendance and grade records as required by Board Policy/Administrative Regulation.
* Counsels pupils when academic and adjustment problems arise, confers with parents and students regarding progress/problems of assigned students.
* Attends and actively participates in staff/faculty meetings; and provides input regarding the planning of instructional goals, objectives and methods.
* Improves skill and knowledge base in current trends, research and methodology in instructional techniques, technology, multicultural content, problem solving and interdisciplinary connections.
* Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

* Passing scores on CORE Praxis I, Praxis II in an academic content area, Special Education, TRE-Reading and ed TPA during the two-year program
* Interest in teaching Special Education students
* Commitment to teach in Anne Arundel County Public Schools for two years upon completion of the program
* This program is limited to a cohort of 20 individuals. All applicants must submit a complete application package that will be reviewed by AACPS and Notre Dame of Maryland University representatives for accuracy, validity, and quality. Candidates will then be selected for an interview with a screening committee.
* The application process is available for candidates beginning in October. The screening interviews are held in March and selected candidates will be notified by the middle of May.

The University Partnership Program in Special Education is a two-year program that provides support to career changers who are interested in becoming Special Education Teachers in Elementary or Secondary Education. Those accepted into this program will attend classes and participate in an internship during the summer months and will be placed in a classroom in August.
