Annie Wright was founded in 1884 by the Bishop of Western Washington, Right Reverend John Paddock.
A napkin ring was required for each boarding student starting in 1884.
In 1884, Annie Wright Seminary opened its doors to 46 students from the Washington Territory, Oregon, British Columbia and Hawaii.
Tacoma Avenue has plank sidewalks and a central track for a streetcar that was still horsedrawn in 1890.
Seniors use the SPADE to plant a tree or shrub as a gift to the school, a tradition since 1891.
The winner was Nellie (Bridgman) Plummer, Class of 1895.
May Day, originally celebrated as Field Day in 1912, is Annie Wright’s most treasured tradition.
By 1915, Annie Wright was seeming a bit shabby next to the spectacular Tacoma High School and stadium.
From 1924, when the school moved to its current site, the May Queen, chosen for her beauty and grace, processed regally to her “throne,” in the cloisters (now the Bamford Commons), flanked by satin-clad pages and flower girls.
The property was purchased on North Tacoma Avenue where the cornerstone of a new building was laid on June 9, 1924.
Construction of the school was completed in time for the start of the 1924–25 school year and the doors opened to students on September 18, 1924.
The same year the new Annie Wright Seminary was completed in 1925, the building took a star turn in the Tacoma made and recently rediscovered feature film The Eyes of the Totem .
The event began in 1988 with competitions for three main scholarships as its draw.
House Cup and house color activities originated in 2003-04 school year as a way of unifying the school and finding connections between divisions.
Formerly named “Abercrombie” and similar to the University of Florida mascot, it was redesigned for Annie Wright by Nike in 2013, and renamed “Chomp.”
In January 2017, Annie Wright Schools announced the decision to launch an Upper School for Boys, which opened on August 30, 2017, with 15 ninth-grade boys.
In June 2018, Annie Wright Schools broke ground on two projects: a new academic building for the boys' upper school and a third gym with an underground pool.
The new gym and pool opened in December 2019.
The first class of high school boys graduated in spring 2021.
