Are business degrees worth it?

By Zippia Team - Dec. 9, 2022

No, business degrees are not worth it. There are many reasons this is the case. Here are some of the top reasons business degrees are not worth it:

  • Business education.

Business majors actually don't learn much about business in business school. This is a problem if you are looking to start a career in the business field.

You may gain some foundational knowledge, but you are probably better off getting a degree in finance or economics if you want to pursue a fruitful career in business.

However, if you plan on obtaining a master's degree in a major like business administration, this can be helpful for starting a solid career in business.

  • Business degree holders don't make as much money as you would think.

According to a recent study, business majors came in 56th place in best-paying college degrees. This was compared to dozens of college majors that are either starting their careers in their field or at mid-level roles.

  • The job market has tons of business degree holders.

When you major in business it is really tough to stand out in a field where there are so many business majors. This means your job opportunities are likely to be slim.

A staggering statistic to consider in this area is that one out of every five college graduates is a business major.

  • If you major in business for a bachelor's degree it could damage your MBA opportunity.

Not getting an undergraduate degree in business can actually help you when you apply to MBA programs. Certain MBA problems have students where less than 25% of them majored in business for their undergraduate degree.

A recent study also showed that undergraduates with a business degree performed worse in their MBA programs than those that did not have an undergraduate business degree.
