No, newspapers/ magazines are not a good career path. It is extremely difficult to break into the newspaper/magazine industry, and the industry as a whole has been shrinking for quite some time.
Getting a career in the newspaper or magazine industry is extremely difficult. Though the industry is shrinking, it is still one that many people want to be a part of, meaning there is a lot of stiff competition.
Most journalists working at nationally recognized newspapers or magazines have attended top-tier ivy league journalism programs, such as ones at Columbia, Harvard, or other exclusive universities.
While attending a school with a stature like Columbia is almost essential to break into national journalism in these areas, smaller local newspapers and magazines represent an easier opportunity for some entering the journalism field.
The only problem is that local newspapers and magazines have been consistently shutting down around the United States for years now.
Much of the journalism space has shifted online, so working for an online newspaper or magazine is somewhat of a viable option, although the competition in these arenas is still very intense.
If you plan on attempting a career path in newspapers/magazines you must be ready to get into a top-tier journalism school, work hard, and stand out in a crowded field.
