Yes, anyone can be a security officer. That is as long as you are over 18 years, a citizen/legal resident alien, and are able to get a Class "D" license.

To be eligible to apply for a Class "D" license requires a minimum of 40 hours of professional training provided by a security officer school or training facility licensed, usually through the State's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

In almost every state, there are specific laws regarding the requirements to work as security officers, both armed and unarmed.

A Class "D" security license means that officers who complete the training hours (take the test and achieve this type of license) have the power to act as a security guard or security officer in an unarmed capacity. A Class "G" allows you to carry a weapon on the job, and like Class "D," it requires its own training and exam.
