Can anyone become a monk?
No, not just anyone can become a monk. To become a monk, you need to be a confirmed and practicing Catholic man. You must be over the age of 18 and in good mental and physical health. You cannot be married or have any children.
In most cases, a person usually applies to be a monk after staying in the monastery a few times. This gives them insight into the life of the monk and time to consider things with the Vocation's Director and the Abbot. If their application is accepted, he will be invited to become a postulant for approximately six months.
A postulant shares in the life and work of the novitiate. This helps to welcome newcomers and allows the monks to get to know each other and consider what God wants. Postulants attend the community's prayer and recreation. They study some aspects of monastic life and prayer.
All aspects of postulancy are designed to assist the process of discernment. After completing postulancy, a man may ask to enter the novitiate. This is the first formal period of training to be a monk. For one year, the novice will study the Rule of St. Benedict and the Constitutions (Church law) of the Congregation.
A novice will also be trained in Latin and monastic history. They will also learn more about prayer, Lectio Divina, and the liturgy. All studies are tailored to meet the individual needs of the novice. The main purpose of the novitiate is to continue the search for God under the guidance of the Novice Master.
The Novice Master will discern if the novice has a vocation to the monastic life in that particular community. If the novice wishes to commit himself to the monastic life, the whole community will consider his application before it can be made his profession.
In the first instance, there will be a temporary commitment (usually for three years). This commitment requires making vows of stability, obedience, and conversatio morum that define a Benedictine monk. The novice will begin theological and philosophical study and will receive more practical formation in the work of the community.
The vows and additional studying are designed to provide a deeper knowledge and understanding of the ways of God and an understanding of the place of monastic life in the mission of the church. After three years, a junior may ask to make his Final Profession of monastic vows for life.
After their solemn vows, the monk is a member of the Chapter and has the right and duty to discuss and vote on issues concerning the community. Some monks may also choose to become ordained in the Priesthood. This will require further training.
