Can you become a forester without a degree?
No, you can not become a forester without a degree. At a minimum, an associate's degree is required to gain an entry-level position as a forest technician. With enough experience, there is room to advance your position. However, the most common path towards becoming a forester is to earn a bachelor's degree.
Most professional forestry positions generally require a bachelor's degree because it provides a foundation in the science needed for this position, including biology, chemistry, natural resources, and environmental sciences. Other important courses include anything related to GPS and other remote sensing technologies.
Many universities and colleges offer bachelor's degrees in forestry accredited by the Society of American Foresters (SAF). The USDA Forest Service may hire college graduates at the GS-5 or GS-7 grade level.
After 1 to 2 years of training and developmental positions, they may be promoted to GS-9. Master's or Ph.D. degrees are required for research forestry positions.
Foresters and forest technicians may need to be licensed or registered in some states. Voluntary professional certification is available through SAF. Someone with an associate's degree looking to gain an entry-level forestry technician position may need to gain volunteer forestry or park experience and build their social network.
