Can you become a physical therapist in 2 years?
Yes, you can become a physical therapist in 2 years. However, this is only true if you already have a bachelor's or master's degree. Once you have that, you must apply to a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program to be eligible for the exam and license.
Most DPT programs require applicants to earn a bachelor's degree before admission. The average time to complete a physical therapy program and pass your board-certified exam takes most people close to 3 years to complete, but some finish it in 2 years.
Once you complete the DPT program, to become a licensed physical therapist, you must then pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE), which is given by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT).
Finally, you will need to obtain a state license. The license looks different depending on the state you wish to work in. For example, most states require practitioners to pass the NPTE and fulfill additional criteria, such as compliance training, background checks, etc.
Once you are working as a physical therapist, you will need to maintain your licensure. This means meeting continuing education requirements every two years in most states and continuing education courses to stay current with the profession's standards and trends.
