Clinical Nurse Specialist vs NP

By Zippia Team - Sep. 14, 2022

A clinical nurse specialist is an advanced practice registered nurse, while a NP is also an advanced practice registered nurse, but they are known to practice more autonomously.

A clinical nurse specialist may perform these functions for patients: order tests, make diagnoses, administer basic treatments, and, in some states, prescribe medications. Beyond this, they may provide expertise and support to a team of nurses.

A NP or nurse practitioner, is trained to assess patient needs, order and interpret diagnostic and laboratory tests, diagnose disease, formulate and prescribe medications and treatment plans.

While the jobs of a clinical nurse specialist and a NP are very similar, there are a few key differences:

  • NPs have a level of autonomy while nurse practitioners do not

  • Clinical nurse specialists work in hospitals, community and mental health clinics, and schools

  • NPs generally work in hospitals, private practices, ambulatory clinics, long-term care facilities, and outpatient settings

  • NPs have an average salary of $92,670

  • Clinical nurse specialist have a salary between $80,000 to $120,000
