No, you do not need a degree to be a maintenance manager. Many smaller facilities do not require a degree, but some larger companies may require a bachelor's degree.

Having experience is valuable in getting a position as a maintenance manager. Many have at least five years of experience before obtaining a role as a maintenance manager, and some positions can require up to ten years of experience.

Although a bachelor's degree is not required for some smaller facilities, larger or more prestigious facilities may require a bachelor's in one of the following:

  • Engineering

  • Administration

  • Facility management

Trade schools or apprenticeships provide much of the experience required to be a maintenance manager. The experience acquired during a trade school or apprenticeship can go towards your overall experience, whereas a standard college degree does not count towards experience.
