This question is about certified phlebotomist certifications.

Does a phlebotomy certification transfer to other states?

By Zippia Team - Jan. 8, 2023

Yes, a phlebotomy certification transfers to other states in most cases. However, because phlebotomy is state regulated, there are some circumstances where a certificate from one state may not be accepted in another.

There are only four states in the country that require phlebotomists to be licensed. California, Washington, Louisiana, and Nevada require all phlebotomists to be certified and licensed. All other states require that phlebotomists take and pass an accredited phlebotomy program. With few exceptions, the requirements for certification are common among programs and across states.

If you wish to transfer your certification to one of the four states requiring a license, it is possible that additional experiential hours or even classwork must be completed. Additionally, if you wish to work in the State of California as a phlebotomist and transfer your license, additional training and lab hours may be required.
