Does the Air National Guard drug test?

By Zippia Team - Jul. 8, 2022

Yes, the Air National Guard performs a drug test as a condition of employment. Every active-duty military guard must be tested at least once per year. Drug testing is mandatory every two years for members of the National Guard and Reserve troops.

If a military guard tests positive for drugs, the test can be used against them in various ways, including court-martial cases and possible involuntary discharge.

Most tests are done as part of a random testing process, and military guard personnel do not have the right to refuse testing. The military conducts approximately 600,000 drug tests each month.

Drug tests are capable of detecting a wide range of substances, including:

  • Marijuana (including medical marijuana)

  • Amphetamines

  • Cocaine

  • LSD

  • 6-MAM (morphine)

  • Barbiturates

  • Methamphetamine

  • PCP

  • Benzodiazepines

  • Ecstasy

  • Methadone

  • Oxycodone

  • Phencyclidine

Senior officers have the authority to request that urine samples be tested for steroids.

Drug use is taken very seriously by the military, and there is a zero-tolerance stance as drug use may impair performance on the field and put the lives of others around them in danger.
