How can I become a CPA without an accounting degree?

By Zippia Team - Dec. 17, 2021

You can become a certified public accountant (CPA) without an accounting degree by earning a bachelor's degree in another field and passing an exam to obtain licensure.

Every state requires a bachelor's degree to become a certified public accountant (CPA). Some states require a bachelor's degree in accounting, specifically. However, many states will accept a bachelor's in any field, with some having course requirements in subject areas like taxes and auditing.

Once you have earned your bachelor's degree, depending on your state's experience requirements, you may also need to gain one or more years of public accounting experience.

Once you have satisfied your state's educational and experience requirements, you are ready to take your certified public accountant (CPA) exam. The CPA exam is the same wherever you take it, but you will need to become licensed in your state of practice upon taking the exam.

The four sections of the certified public accountant (CPA) exam are:

  1. Auditing and Attestation (AUD)

  2. Business Environment and Concepts (BEC)

  3. Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR)

  4. Regulation (REG)
