This question is about educator jobs.
To become a teacher in Massachusetts, a person needs either a bachelor's degree or teacher's certification, as well as a passing grade on the state licensing exam. People enrolled in bachelor's of education programs in Massachusetts often have a second major or specialization, such as English, history, or special education.
Massachusetts does not have general mandatory undergraduate credit hour requirements. Prerequisite coursework varies, depending on different state-approved teacher preparation programs. However, most programs require a person to complete a certain amount of credit hours as a student-teacher.
The first half of the time as a student-teacher is typically observation of a teacher in another class. The latter portion of this time is spent developing and implementing a curriculum in the class you are assisting under the supervision of the mentor teacher.
Once a person has completed their student-teaching hours and finishes their degree program, they must take the teacher certification exam. Candidates must complete and pass a basic skills assessment and content area assessments through the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL).
Teaching candidates are required to successfully complete the MTEL Communication Literacy test as well as the subject matter knowledge test(s) required for the desired area of certification.
If they pass this test, the teacher must then apply for a teaching license, which essentially is the completion of a background check and the state ensuring that all other necessary requirements have been completed.
