How do I become an accountant without an accounting degree?
To become an accountant without an accounting degree, you need to get the proper certifications. There are a variety you can get, including Certified Management Accountant, Certified Information Systems Auditor, or a Certified Internal Auditor.
All of these have different prerequisites, so make sure you look into which ones you qualify for or what you have to do to become eligible. Requirements vary from state to state, so check into your particular state's rules as well. Typically, though, these programs require a bachelor's degree and a few years of professional accounting experience.
If you don't have a degree at all, you can still take some of these tests if you have the right amount of experience. There are even a few states that don't require a bachelor's degree to take the Certified Public Accountant examination.
As far as getting experience goes, you'll likely need to be willing to do a lot of unpaid volunteer work or internships. That may mean being willing to help out on an accounting-based project at your current job, or it may even mean taking an accounting internship.
