How do you become a general counsel of a corporation?
To become a general counsel of a corporation, you will need to have significant educational qualifications and work experience in corporate law. The reason for this is that a general counsel is expected to have an excellent understanding of business and legal subject matter expertise.
To be an effective general counsel requires experience in financial management on a corporate level, including assessing the cost and allocation of resources. This is in addition to the education and training needed to become a lawyer.
Because the general counsel is usually a member of the executive leadership team, they must have a strong comprehension of the strategies and business activities of the company and a keen understanding of business and key business concepts (i.e., finance, accounting, statistics, marketing, etc.).
