How do you write a resume for a faculty job?

By Zippia Team - Mar. 26, 2022

You write a resume for a faculty job by highlighting your educational credentials and teaching experience. Your faculty resume or CV should provide a roadmap of your journey in academia. The CV should be divided into clear sections highlighting your different academic experiences.

To get started, just after your contact information, you should include an objective, which is a short statement covering you as a candidate. In no more than four sentences, highlight your education and major academic achievements.

For example, "Lecturer and researcher with 10+ years of experience teaching courses in both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Published over ten articles in peer-reviewed journals."

Next, provide information on your educational credentials. Be sure to include information such as Year of completion or expected completion (no starting dates), degree type, major and minors (if applicable), department and institution, honors and awards, dissertation/thesis title, and advisor.

If you have any relevant professional experience relevant to the position, include them in a section titled 'Professional Appointments.'

When listing your employment history, only include contracted positions such as Postdoctoral, instructorships, adjunct, and tenure track positions. Include Teaching Assistant (TA) and one-off course adjunct positions in the "Teaching" section, not here.

After that, you'll want to include any publications you may have. Divide your peer-reviewed publications into further subcategories in the following order: books, peer-reviewed journal articles, contributions to edited volumes equivalent to peer-reviewed journals. If you don't have any publications, you can skip this section.

Additional sections can be created for conferences, peer review, and awards. You'll also want to include one section to teaching experience. To do this, you're going to want to include separate groupings that list the undergraduate and graduate-level courses and list what those courses were.

Finally, be sure to include a list of your skills in any additional languages you teach in and finish by listing at least three professional references and their contact information and title.
