How hard is EMT school?
EMT school is hard, contrary to what some may think. EMT schools generally do have high acceptance rates and are short programs, however, this does not translate into an easy educational path.
Even though most EMT schools have high acceptance rates, they also tend to have very high dropout rates, sometimes with more than 50 percent of a starting class dropping out.
EMT schools are designed to be challenging because the work that an EMT does is both challenging and stressful. The difficult courses are to weed out anyone unfit for the job.
An EMT student who wants to graduate and obtain a certification needs to attend every class, dedicate many hours to studying, and score the necessary marks on exams.
In addition to the course load, most EMT students participate in ambulance ride-alongs to see what being an EMT is really like. This can be exhilarating for some and a put-off to others.
Finally, all EMT students must pass the NREMT exam, an adaptive test that generates harder questions when test takers answer correctly.
No two NREMT exams are alike and there is no standardized version or even a standard number of questions. Question counts range from 70 to 120.
