How hard is it to become a Navy diver?

By Zippia Team - Sep. 7, 2022

It is quite difficult to become a Navy diver. There are various stages of training involved that test both your mental and physical toughness.

Becoming a Navy diver begins with basic training at the Navy's Great Lakes training center. Here, all navy inductees receive their initial training.

Aspiring divers will then take the Navy's Diver Preparation Course, which last seven weeks and focuses on basic electrical and engineering courses as well as water preparedness and physical conditioning.

Second Class Divers School is the next stage lasting 15 weeks. This stage focuses on specific skills such as underwater demolition, cutting and welding, and underwater ship repair.

Fleet training is the next stage, where candidates are assigned to a naval unit and continue to develop their skills in construction and ship repair. Many fully trained divers enroll in advanced training and go on to become master divers.
