How hard is it to become a secret service agent?
It is quite hard to become a secret service agent. In addition to minimum educational requirements, candidates must also meet other government-imposed standards.
The minimum educational requirements for someone hoping to work as a secret service agent are a bachelor's degree. Earning a bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 to 3.5 in your junior and senior years qualifies you to be hired at a G-7 pay level or approximately $38,000.
If you have a master's degree and at least one year of criminal investigative experience, you may qualify to enter at a G-9 level or approximately $47,000 per year.
In addition to the education-related requirements, candidates must have eyesight no worse than 20/60. Applicants must also take and pass the Treasury Enforcement Agent Examination as well as a physical examination. Preference is often given to candidates that have an educational background in criminal justice or majored in pre-law.
Candidates must also submit to extensive background checks. Agents are required to have a top-secret security clearance, and anything arising from a background check that jeopardizes your security clearance will prevent you from being hired as a secret service agent.
