How hard is it to become a veterinarian?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 15, 2022

It is extremely difficult to become a veterinarian. From low acceptance rates at vet colleges to the number of years necessary to practice the profession, becoming a veterinarian is one of the most difficult career goals to achieve.

There are approximately thirty accredited vet schools in the United States, while there are 155 accredited medical schools in the country. This provides five times fewer opportunities to those seeking a degree in veterinary medicine.

Because of the small number of schools offering these degrees, acceptance rates range from 7% to 24%, with an average acceptance rate among all schools to be 10%.

Candidates must first earn a bachelor's degree before attending a school for veterinary medicine. Vet school is an additional four years, with any aspiring vets opting to complete an internship after graduation.

Obtaining licensure through the American Association of Veterinary State Boards is the next step. Once these steps have been completed, candidates have invested between eight and nine years in their education and are able to practice veterinary medicine.
