How long do doctors work?

Most doctors work 40 to 60 hours per week. However, about a quarter of doctors work between 61 and 80 hours per week. Certain doctors, such as emergency room doctors, can work 12 to 16-hour shifts.

Other doctors, such as ones that run a private practice, may only work eight to 10-hour shifts. A lot of doctors are also on-call, which means they could be called to come into work at any time of the day or night.
