In general, there is no specific amount of time you must work to get unemployment in the United States. However, there are a few states that have rules pertaining to individuals who have worked less than 30 days. In these states, workers who have worked less than 30 days are considered ineligible for unemployment benefits.
In most states, unemployment eligibility is determined by the number of hours the worker has worked and how much income the worker has earned during their base period. It normally does not matter how many different employers the worker has had. A base period is one year and is typically defined as the first four of the last five completed quarters.
Earning amounts eligibility depends on each specific state's requirements. The individual must meet the earning requirements during the base period that is being evaluated. They also must have a qualifying reason for being unemployed. Here is a list of the items that determine unemployment benefits for workers in the US:
The amount of hours the worker has worked, no matter how many employers they might have had
How much income the worker has earned during their base period, this varies state-by-state
If the worker has a qualifying reason for being unemployed then they are considered eligible for unemployment benefits
The United States Department of Labor's unemployment insurance programs provide unemployment benefits to eligible individuals who experience unemployment for reasons that are not of their own making. Workers must meet certain other eligibility requirements in order to receive unemployment benefits.
Unemployment insurance benefits exist as both a state and federal program that provides monetary benefits to eligible workers. Each state administers its own separate unemployment insurance program, but all states follow the same standards and guidelines outlined by federal laws.
