How long do I have to work to get unemployment?
In general, there is no specific amount of time you must work to get unemployment in the United States. However, there are a few states that have rules pertaining to individuals who have worked less than 30 days. In these states, workers who have worked less than 30 days are considered ineligible for unemployment benefits.
In most states, unemployment eligibility is determined by the number of hours the worker has worked and how much income the worker has earned during their base period. It normally does not matter how many different employers the worker has had. A base period is one year and is typically defined as the first four of the last five completed quarters.
Earning amounts eligibility depends on each specific state's requirements. The individual must meet the earning requirements during the base period that is being evaluated.
