How long do you have to go to school to become a pharmacy tech?
A pharmacy technician certificate/diploma program takes anywhere from 9 to 12 months to complete. To become certified, you must apply for certification to either the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, which administers the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam, or the National Healthcare Association.
In some states where a license is mandatory, you must register to obtain a license with the pharmacy board of the state you plan to work in. To maintain the certification, you must apply for recertification every two years. To qualify for recertification, you need to complete at least 20 hours of continuing education.
While a pharmacy technician associate degree is not always required for employment, this training will be an added advantage when seeking jobs and allow individuals to continue their education to the bachelor's level.
The program covers pharmacy operations, pharmacology, and advanced administration and may include an externship component. An associate degree in pharmacy technology also equips students to take the certification exam.
