How long does it take to be a patient service representative?

By Zippia Team - Dec. 17, 2021

It takes about four to six years to become a patient service representative. While a person can become a patient service representative without a bachelor's degree, it is becoming less common. Most patient service representatives have a bachelor's degree and some experience in healthcare.

Because this role requires an in-depth understanding of the healthcare system and explaining diagnoses and treatments, a significant background in the medical industry is needed. This is also why more often than not, a bachelor's or associate's degree in a health-related discipline is required for successful candidates in this role.

While not required, there are two certifications that every patient service representative should pursue. These are the Board Certified Patient Advocate (BCPA) and Professional Patient Advocate Certificate Training Program (PPAC).

The BCPA is a certification designed to assure the public that the patient advocate has the standards and competencies to succeed in the role. The PPAC, which the Professional Patient Advocate Institute offers, is a program aimed at introducing professionals to the practice of patient advocacy.
