How long does it take to become a Machinist?

It takes 4 years of professional experience to become a machinist. That is the time it takes to learn specific machinist skills, but does not account for time spent in formal education.

There are certain skills that you need to obtain in order to become a successful machinist. Some of the most common skills are listed below. Along with each skill, we provide an actual example of how someone included the skill on their resume:

  1. CNC -- Manufactured components via print or sample utilizing both CNC and conventional metalworking equipment.

  2. Machine Parts -- Machine parts for the fabrication and assembly of water purification equipment used by the military and pharmaceutical industries.

  3. Shop Equipment -- Operated various machine shop equipment and tools for parts fabrication and machined items for retrofit of maintenance department3

  4. Micrometers -- Measure and examine completed units in order to ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as calipers and/or micrometers.

  5. Hand Tools -- Operate hand tools/other machinery as necessary to complete production.

Common Certifications For A Machinist

The Master Engine Machinist certification is most common among Machinists. This certification is awarded by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. The advanced certification is for more experienced employees as it often requires some work experience to acquire. To become a certified Machinist with Master Engine Machinist, You need to pass the exam. This certificate requires more than two years of work experience. Renew certification every 5 year.
