How long does it take to become a manager at a restaurant?
It takes about four to six years to become a manager at a restaurant. Restaurant managers usually work in the food industry for several years before being promoted to a managerial position.
Once a person turns sixteen, they can start gaining experience in the foodservice industry. Many aspiring restaurant managers gain experience working in restaurants as kitchen hands, servers, dishwashers, and bussers.
In addition to gaining experience working in a restaurant, most restaurant managers earn at least an associate's degree in business hospitality. This degree, which teaches about business and the hospitality industry, takes two years to complete.
While it is not necessary to become a restaurant manager, it can allow a person to move into the position more quickly than they otherwise would. Another way to move into the restaurant manager position more quickly is to get a certification in food handling and serving alcohol.
This certification is mandatory in some parts of the United States. Even where it is not compulsory, many restaurants prefer hiring managers with accreditation.
