How long does it take to become a pharmacy tech?
It typically takes two years or less to become a pharmacy tech. Traditional schooling generally takes about two years to complete. However, in states that don't require formal training, it's possible to become a pharmacy technician through on-the-job training.
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) is the accrediting body for pharmacy technician programs. Training programs in pharmacy technology are available from various vocational and community colleges, hospitals, universities, or for-profit vocational schools.
Most require a high school diploma or GED as a prerequisite, and individual schools might have additional requirements. Programs range from as little as 15 weeks to as long as two years, awarding a certificate, diploma, or associate degree.
Once you have completed the training program of your choice, the next step is to earn your certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) with a passing score on the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE).
